No. If you are not a match, it may be possible to do a "paired exchange."
A paired exchange involves a swap by which your kidney goes to someone other than Chris but a kidney from another matching donor goes to Chris. Exchanges like this are managed by organizations such as the National Kidney Registry.
Generally speaking, kidney donation surgery is a common laparoscopic, minimally invasive, and low risk procedure. As with any surgery, you would be carefully evaluated before proceeding.
Yes. There is no maximum age. Although the older you are, the harder it is to qualify.
You can change your mind and end the process at any time.
Typically nothing. Costs are covered by organizations such as the National Kidney Registry and Chris’ insurance.
The recovery process depends on several variables including the type of surgery and your health. Generally, it involves a short hospital stay and a few weeks for full recovery.
Yes. A person needs only one kidney and donors can live a normal life after donation. If there are contraindications to surgery, a person will not be cleared for donation.
The donation process can be complicated and we encourage you to learn as much as you can about it. Talk to anyone you know who has been involved in the process. Online information can be found at the websites of organizations such as the National Kidney Registry, The National Kidney Foundation, The American Transplant Foundation, Donate Life America (and its state affiliates), the Alliance for Paired Kidney Donation, and Waitlistzero. Further information is available from the team at Chris’ transplant center. We can always be reached at getkidneyforchris@gmail.com
